Author Interview

What was your favorite chapter (or part) to write and why?
This book contains so many parts I adore. So much happens in it. It’s hard to pick just one. Plus, most of my favorite parts are highly spoilerish. ;) But there is a moment of revelation with Jace that I hold very dear. It’s very emotional and was one of the first scenes I ever had in my mind when I started the series, so that will always be a favorite. I also love some particular scenes between Marcus, Liam, and Kaden. There’s a lot of growth in this book for a lot of characters.

Is anything in your book based on real life experiences or purely all imagination?
Most is purely imagination, but a lot of the sibling interaction is, at least in part, inspired by my real life experiences. Like Kyrin, I only have brothers (though I have two, not five). There is one part in this book where she and her brothers discuss hiding some old glass in a tree back home. That is a direct reference to something my brothers and I did.

What inspired you to write this book?
The initial inspiration came from DragonQuest by Donita K. Paul. She has a half-blooded character in the book who I adore. The moment I found out that he was half-blooded, I just paused and the idea for Jace started growing in my mind. Everything about the series grew from there.

Is there a particular author or book that influenced you in any way either as a child or an adult?
I think the one fiction book that influenced me the most is The Lord of the Rings. It was a huge part of my teen years and really shaped who I am, especially as a writer. I’m not sure I ever would have started writing fantasy if not for LOTR.

How do you twine your Christian beliefs with the fantasy world?
I don’t really have any special way in which I go about it. Basically I incorporate my faith into fantasy the same way I would any story. Everything is the same; it just takes place in a fantasy world instead.
Is there anything that clashes between them and how do you overcome that?
Not really. I suppose the one thing that might clash a little is when you have different fantasy races, but that wasn’t really an issue in Ilyon Chronicles because all of my fantasy races are basically human with different attributes that distinguish between them.

Review

After all that has happened – deaths, betrayals, and religious persecution – Kyrin, Jace, and the rest of the rebellion continue to plot against the tyrannical emperor. They catch wind that the emperor intends to attack the small, neighboring kingdom of Samara and begin plans to come to Samara’s aid. In the midst of this, Jace’s depression worsens and news comes of a mysterious teacher in Samara who is performing miracles.

Samara’s Peril is yet another awesome book from Jaye L. Knight. She expertly weaves themes of sacrifice, love, and internal struggle into another action-filled novel.

There were a couple plot twists in this book that I was not expecting. There was enough fore-shadowing to figure it out but in the scheme of the series, I did not expect it. However, they fit perfectly with the theme of the series and especially the themes in the book, particularly guilt, depression, and forgiveness. As a person who has watched those in close relationships with myself go through depression, I believe this book portrays both the internal struggles of the characters and the ultimate reason for healing as entirely accurate.

One thing I would comment on is the seeming lack of balance between the action and non-action. This book focuses more on internal struggle and character relationships than it does on the actual action, which is upcoming war in Samara. It made the book a little slow at times, but the end result is totally worth it.

I would highly recommend this book to those who enjoy NA Christian fantasy.

I received a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
