Beautiful People: February

After seeing a few bloggers participate in it, I decided to join the Beautiful People linkup. It is a set of questions several bloggers answer about their books or works-in-progress and share it with the readers of their blog. I thought it looked fun and that you, readers, might enjoy the peek into the story I am currently writing.

This edition of Beautiful people is the Valentine's edition, focusing on a couple. I chose to focus on my couple, Penn and Emma.

Q U E S T I O N S

How long have they been a couple?
About a year by the end of the story.

How did they first meet?
Without giving too much away, fourteen year old Penn walked through a portal and found himself face to face with twelve year old Emma. Emma, not knowing of the existence of portals, was shocked. A friendship formed out of the initial awkwardness, and many years later, Penn went back to pursue a more intimate relationship with his childhood friend.

What were their first thoughts of each other? (Love at first sight or “you’re freakishly annoying”?)
Their first thoughts of each other were ones of surprise, as you can imagine. After that, Emma thought Penn was a bit of a know it all, and Penn thought Emma as a bit of a child.
What do they do that most annoys each other?
Penn is slightly overprotective of Emma, which annoys her very much. In contrast, Penn finds it irritating that Emma is always determined to be involved, putting her in danger, instead of remaining placidly at home, as Penn always thought a woman should do.

Are their personalities opposite or similar?
Similar. They are different, but not polar opposites. Stubborn and determined defines them both.
How would their lives be different without each other?
Their lives would be totally different than each other. Emma eventually goes to the world Penn grew up in as a result of their relationship. The events that follow completely change the courses of their lives as they would have been. Emma would likely have stayed in her own world, gone to college, and had a career if she had not traveled to another world because of him. Penn, however, would likely be dead.

Are they ever embarrassed of each other?
Every now and again, but it is not a common problem.

Does anyone disapprove of their relationship?
At first, Penn was not supposed to have traveled to Emma's world at all. His parents would not have disapproved of their relationship if it were not for that fact. After that, nearly everyone approves.

Do they see their relationship as long-term/leading to marriage?
Most definitely.

If they could plan the “perfect outing” together, where would they go?
Probably a picnic in the woods with some exploring and maybe swimming afterwards.

What did you think? Any questions? How would you answer these questions for characters in a story you are writing?

Blog Tour, Review, Excerpt: Honor

I am pleased to introduce Rachel Rossano's newest book, Honor, book two of the Novels of Rynan Series. Book one, Duty, was one, if not the first book I ever reviewed. I enjoyed it so much, I have been following Rachel's publications ever since. I hope you will enjoy her books as well.

Description

Honor
Rachel Rossano

The Earl of Dentin excels in his position as Securer of the Realm. But the king’s order to pluck an orphaned child from a loving home unsettles Dentin. When a dark-eyed woman challenges his honor regarding the mission, Dentin finds himself unable to justify his actions or get her out of his mind. Something about her lack of fear intrigues him.

Lady Elsa Reeve attempts to avoid the marriage of convenience her brother and mother demand of her. She understands the need to pay off her brother's massive debt. She only wants her family to consider her wishes in the process.

As Elsa becomes further entangled in a snare of her brother’s creating, only one man defends her. But can she trust Dentin, her unlikely champion, and his motives? With a murderer on the loose, Elsa’s fate in jeopardy, and a traitor plotting against the king, Dentin finds his priorities shifting in an unexpected direction.

About Rachel Rossano

Rachel Rossano lives with her husband and three children in the northeastern part of the United States. Homeschooled through high school, she began writing her early teens. She didn’t become serious about pursuing a career as an author until after she had graduated from college and happily married. Then the children came.

Now she spends her days being a wife, mother, teacher, and household manager. Her evenings and free moments are devoted to her other loves, writing and book cover design. Drawing on a lifelong love of reading and history, she spends hours creating historical feeling fantasy worlds and populating them with characters who live and breathe on the page.

Reveiw

In Honor, Elsa is the daughter of a noble who is deeply in debt because of her brother’s foolish bets. She refuses to play into her brother’s plans by helping him out of his debt, but his debt might take her family down regardless. Dentin, however, is the second in command to the king. But this king has asked him to do things that are against Dentin’s moral standards and that make many people hate him. Will Elsa and Dentin find a way to marry? And will Dentin and Elsa choose to honor the king or to honor God?

Honor by Rachel Rossano, is a lovely story combining action and politics with romance. It was a refreshing change from those books I have read of Rachel’s whose romances are focused on arranged marriages in which the characters fall in love after the wedding. This one breaks away from that theme somewhat in bringing the characters together through love first, before bringing in the necessary marriage.

The characters were deep and had their struggles. Lady Elsa was rebelling against society’s stereotype in which women have value only through marriage. Her brother was horrible and tried to use her as a tool instead of a human. Elsa stood up for herself and for others as much as she could. I admired her kindness and determination.

Dentin was strong and fought for honor and obedience to his king. But he had to choose whether to follow a corrupt king or do what he knew was right. I admire his growing integrity.

The story was as much a story of history and politics as it was of romance. The action and turmoil it brought about added to the story and raised the risks for the characters. The author portrayed the country’s problems, even those stemming from the previous war, very well.

I also enjoyed the involvement of the main characters of book one, Duty. Tomas and Brielle were a delightful couple whose influences on Elsa and Dentin was beneficial. In addition, a portion of the turmoil of the story revolved around their family.

Honor is a sweet romance and an intriguing story I might read again.

I received a free copy of this book from the author in exchange for an honest review.

“Elsa.” Lander tugged on my skirts with grubby fingers, leaving smudges behind.

“Yes, sweet.” I lowered myself to his level. Meeting his serious blue eyes, my heart ached at how his world would change in a matter of days.

“I can’t find Darnay. Marmay said to find him, but he’s hiding. You’re so good at finding things. Can you help me?”

I smiled. “I will try.” Standing up to my full height, I scanned the growing crowd for Darnay’s dark mop of hair. Finally I spotted him just as he darted under the table closest the fireplace. “He is under the table there.” I pointed. Before I could say anything else, Lander took off at a run. “Walk!” I called after him.

He obediently slowed his pace for about three steps before resuming a headlong charge between the clustered skirts of my younger sister and two of her friends. They scattered like geese, scolding him as he ran deafly on seeking his best friend.

“Elsa Maude.”

I shied away from my mother’s voice in my ear, but her sudden grip on my upper arm stopped me from going far.

“I thought I made myself clear.”

“You did. Flirt with all the eligible and titled men in the room.”

Her grip tightened painfully. “Watch your tongue.” Her fingers eased. “Stop playing with the children and mingle with the adults. These men want a wife, not a nursemaid.”

I opened my mouth to argue that the men would want children and a woman who knew how to raise them, but thought better of it. “Yes, mother.”

“Now go.” She released my arm, smoothing the fabric creased by her fingers. “Spine straight and shoulders back.” Sending me off with a tight smile, she motioned off toward the other end of the hall.
I obeyed, but as I surveyed the crowd of people before me, my gaze fell on Lord Dentin sitting at the high table on the other end of the room. Resting his forearms on the linen-covered table before him, he clutched a goblet between his large hands and frowned at it grimly. The hunched line of his wide shoulders somehow reminded me of a little boy. Despite my half-hearted resolve to at least make a show of obedience to my mother’s instructions, my feet carried me to his side instead.

“May I join you?” I asked.

He lifted his head and reminded me instantly that I spoke with a man full grown. His perceptive gaze swept over me from the ribbon in my hair to the hem of my skirt before returning to my face. Then, just as abruptly, he looked away again.

Blog Tour: The King's Scrolls: Character Spotlight: Leetra

Joining us again today is Jaye L Knight. She has written a character spotlight featuring Leetra, a crete introduced in The King's Scrolls. I learned some interesting new things from the character spotlight and I hope you will enjoy it as well.

Description

The King's Scrolls
Jaye L. Knight

Following the harrowing events that brought them to Landale Forest, Jace and Kyrin have settled comfortably into their new lives and the mission of protecting those under the emperor’s persecution. The fast approach of winter brings with it the anticipation of a quiet few months ahead. That is until the arrival of four mysterious, dragon-riding cretes who seek aid in a mission of great importance—not only to their own people, but to all followers of Elôm.

Hidden in the vast mining valley north of Valcré, a faithful crete has spent years sharing his knowledge with the destitute miners and their families and is known to possess what may be Arcacia’s last surviving copies of the King’s Scrolls—the Word of Elôm. Joining the cretes, those in Landale must find the crete teacher and bring him to safety, but it is a race against time. Should Daican’s men find him first, execution and the destruction of the Scrolls is certain.

When disaster strikes, all seems lost. Could Elôm have a plan even in the enemy’s triumph?

Character Spotlight: Leetra

Appearance: Long black hair, large lavender eyes, slim, 5’ tall.
Age: 16
Race: Crete
History: Leetra is a young crete from the Hawk Clan, one of the most prominent of the cretes’ twelve different clans. She is the oldest of seven children and a cousin to Talas. She is a very skilled dragon rider and has spent much time learning from one of the most skilled physicians in her city. For over a year, she has served under the prominent crete captain, Verus Darq.

Author’s Note: Oh, where do I begin with Leetra? I think the best way to describe her is small, but fierce. She’s the polar opposite of her cousin Talas and his fun-loving, friendly nature. In other words, she is very crete. She’s fiercely loyal to her people and doesn’t like outsiders. She’s completely unlike any female character I’ve ever written before who wasn’t an antagonist. I think, at one point, I said to my brother, “She’s the prickliest and most unlikeable good character I’ve ever written about.” And it’s actually really fun, especially when I get to contrast her with Talas.

I expect her to not be well liked, but I love her. She’s so closed off and has such impenetrable walls surrounding her emotions, but there’s really a lot going on inside of her. She’s very prideful, which is a major vice in many cretes, and she’s very stubborn. Yet, very rarely, she will have a moment where you can see just how vulnerable she is inside, especially when that pride of hers gets bruised. She wants to be tough, but no one can be tough all the time. She hasn’t learned yet that it’s okay to let the walls down and show some weakness. But, eventually, her walls have to crack. And with those cracks, I believe some of her prickliness will begin to fade in time.

I’m not exactly sure when Leetra first came into existence in my mind. I think it was probably this picture I found on Pinterest. It’s exactly how I picture her, and it captures so much of her personality. And then, somehow, she became Talas’s cousin, which I love because I’ve never really written about cousins before, and my cousins have always been some of my best friends.

Description

Resistance
Jaye L. Knight

“Don’t you know? Animals like you have no soul.”

Could God ever love a half-blood all of society looks upon with such fear and disdain? Jace once believed so, but when a tragic loss shatters the only peace he’s ever known, his faith crumbles as the nagging doubts he’s tried to put behind him descend on his grieving heart. With them come the haunting memories of the bloodstained past he longs to forget, but can never escape.

Taken from home at a young age and raised to serve the emperor, Kyrin Altair lives every day under a dangerous pretense of loyalty. After her unique observation skills and perfect memory place her into direct service to the emperor, Kyrin finds herself in further jeopardy as it becomes increasingly difficult to hide her belief in Elôm, the one true God.

Following the emperor’s declaration to enforce the worship of false gods under the penalty of death, many lives are endangered. But there are those willing to risk everything to take a stand and offer aid to the persecuted. With their lives traveling paths they never could have imagined, Jace and Kyrin must fight to overcome their own fears and conflicts with society as they become part of the resistance.

Blog Background

I know, I know, I changed the look of the blog again after only a few months. I definitely like this better than the last one because it is so bright and pretty. I did not like that the last background was a photo, or that it had nothing to do with books, which is also why I changed the name to "Zerina Blossom's Books." This design also has little to do with books, but I still like it better. I will try to stick to this background regardless.

My sister is responsible for the design, I believe. She made it on an awesome app I found called Kaliedoo, or Magic Doodle. I used one of the creations she made on my device as the background. Isn't it beautiful?

Interview

Welcome to Zerina Blossom's Books! We look forward to this interview.
Why did you feel you had to tell this story?

Well, Ilyon Chronicles is one of those stories that kind of showed up out of nowhere and demanded to be written. It didn’t really give me much choice. ;) But I think the reason I felt so strongly about it is it came during a really difficult time in my life. It was sort of a way to work through that. Also I feel very strongly about the themes in this story—themes of God loving you even when you don’t think you could possibly deserve it, of not treating people differently or badly just because they’re not like you, and of sticking to your faith even through persecution.

Those themes are very evident, which is what I love most about your books.
What was your favorite chapter (or part) to write and why?

In The King’s Scrolls, I think my favorite part to write was with Kyrin’s brothers. They have a much bigger role in TKS than they did in Resistance, and I loved working with their sibling relationships. Anything with interesting sibling dynamics is always fun for me.

Family relationships are always interesting.
Is there any particular author or book that influenced you in any way either growing up or as an adult?

The Lord of the Rings had a huge influence on me as a teenager and even now. I’m not sure I would be writing fantasy right now if not for discovering LOTR. It was just after reading it that I first decided I wanted to be a true author.

Awesome!
Our study of memory in one of my classes made my think of Kyrin's abilities. What inspired you to give Kyrin photographic and autobiographic memory? What kind of research did you do?

That development in Kyrin’s character is one of my favorite memories of first starting Ilyon Chronicles. Originally, she was just going to be very observant. Then, shortly after I started writing it, I was watching TV with my mom and saw a commercial for the TV show, Unforgettable, which is about a detective with a perfect memory. I consider it a God moment, having that commercial catch my attention and inspire a critical detail about Kyrin. As for research, I looked up some people who had this ability and read their stories. I also ended up watching the first episode of Unforgettable, and that gave me a good starting point for Kyrin’s abilities.

Very interesting. You did a good job with Kyrin's abilities. They appear real.
What has been the toughest criticism given to you as an author? What has been the best compliment?

I’ve gotten my share of bad reviews on some of my earlier books. It always stings for a bit. The worst was probably my first one star review on Resistance. It’s not actually the worst review I’ve ever received, but just the fact that it was Resistance made it a bit harder since I’ve poured everything I am as a writer into this series. But that’s a writer’s life. I’m not sure I could pick only one compliment as the best because I’ve gotten so many wonderful reviews and sweet emails from readers that have been a huge encouragement, but I always especially love it when someone who doesn’t usually like fantasy tells me how much they enjoy my books. That always brings a huge grin to my face.
We always love those good reviews!
Thank you, Jaye, for the thoughtful answers to my questions. It has been a pleasure.

Review

The King’s Scrolls picks up Kyrin, Jace, and Kaden’s story not long after Resistance ended. Their company along with the emperor have discovered the existence of a man writing letters about The King’s Scrolls, the holy books of Elom. After joining forces with several cretes and receiving dragons from the cretes for their help, the group sets off to find this man and the last known, complete copy of The King’s Scrolls before the emperor does.

After loving Resistance, I found that The King’s Scrolls was just as fantastic. Characters were added and relationships were deepened between the characters and their God. Each of them grew spiritually as well as in maturity. I love these books because Jaye has created a fun, adventurous story that is balanced with deep struggle and growth in the characters that influences me to do likewise.

A major part of The King’s Scrolls was focused on family relationships. The estrangement of Kyrin and Kaden from their country, and therefore family, certainly took its toll on all of them. The spiritual beliefs formed a barrier between them and their mother, brothers, and grandfather. It was interesting to see who became followers of Elom and who chose their own desires over family and faith.

A large portion of the book was spent in grief and sadness over lost loved ones. The majority of the characters lost someone. They each grew as a result of their losses, but they were devastated nonetheless. The deep growth that resulted from the grief and struggle was well worth the effort of reading it. All seemed lost, but hope won in the end. As a side note, I did not find the period of the characters’ grief boring, but those who love only the action might.

The book introduced another awesome addition—Dragons! Did I mention that I love them? Well, dragons are a large part of the King’s Scrolls. While they may not be sentient creatures, they still present awesome additions to the cast of characters.

The plot was intriguing with its dramatic ups and downs. Things never went as planned for the characters, but that is what made the story great.

In conclusion, Jaye has written another amazing book, with deep topics as well as an intriguing story. I eagerly look forward to book three.

I have received a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
