Book Review: Shades of Doon

Hello! Emily, here! I just wanted to let you know a couple things. I am planning on making some changes to this blog in the coming weeks, namely, moving this blog to Wordpress and possibly its own website. Also, I'm currently taking a class about Adobe Photshop and Illustrator, and I'm planning on incorporating what I'm learning to make some interesting images for this blog. Fingers crossed that everything goes as planned!

Today, I have a book review for Shades of Doon, which is co-authored by Carey Corp and Lorie Langdon. For once, it's not a book I got specifically for review, and because of that, my review is a little bit more sporadic than usual and doesn't have a summary at the beginning for once. I hope you enjoy it.

Four years ago, Willow’s best friend, Ashton, was sent to Juvenile Detention for manslaughter. She hasn’t heard anything from him in all that time, though she sent him dozens of letters and defended his innocence to anyone who would listen. Now, though, Ashton has been released from prison and is coming back to their town Gilt Hollow for revenge against those who falsely accused him. What does that mean for Willow, who Ashton believes deserted him?

Gilt Hollow by Lorie Langdon was an interesting book. It is a YA romance and mystery, the characters seniors in high school and the story revolving around the mystery of who is really the murderer. The murder mystery part of the plot was very intriguing. Someone was framing Ashton for the weird things that were happening in the town and high school—a shredded football uniform, a robbery, and more. The characters eventually started working together to discover who was framing him, and their discoveries kept me in suspense throughout. The setting was wonderfully described and used to the story’s advantage, as were the events and quirks in the town. I wasn’t always sure what to make of the romance though. We have this young man bent on revenge and this sweet girl trying to survive high school, and it was cute how everything turned out. But there were times when I wondered, with the knowledge that Willow had at the time, whether she should want a relationship with Ashton at all. He seemed creepy and cruel at times, though some of that was just her perception of him without all the facts, and made me wonder about the healthiness of their relationship. Everything turned out all right at the end, though. The characters were perfect for each other.

I enjoyed this novel and recommend it to those who enjoy YA contemporary novels.

The problem with the Fire Eyes (red diamonds) has not gone away, and Lady Ella is determined to work with Duke Justin, Duchess Brook, and their cousin Lord Cayton to thwart Lady Pratt and her brother Lord Rushworth once and for all. But what happens when Ella discovers that she has unknowingly had the diamonds all along, creepy Lord Rushworth decides to court her, and Lord Cayton is working as a double agent and fake-courting her also?

A Lady Unrivaled was a beautiful end to the Ladies of the Manor trilogy by Roseanna M. White. Both of the main characters had made appearances in the previous novels, and it was sweet to watch them fall in love, if rather unwillingly at first. Lady Ella had already been one of my favorites and, perhaps, the character most like me in the series. Lord Cayton was not a character I particularly cared for in the previous books, since he broke the heart of one of Brook’s cousins and married for money, but the growth that began in him in The Reluctant Duchess continued, making him a wonderful main character. Both he and Ella struggled with some insecurity issues due to some of their previous mistakes, and it was wonderful to see them change and mature in the light of God’s and each other’s love. The situation with the Fire Eyes was the other major conflict A Lady Unrivaled. Lord Rushworth was as determined as ever to get the diamonds, though he claimed the only reason was to save his sister from the “Russian mobster” who already gave them a down payment. He was dark and creepy as usual, but seeing him with a shard of humanity through his attraction to Ella somehow made him even worse. He is not an enemy I would want—much less a suitor! The conclusion of this tale was immensely satisfying and tied up a few loose ends with the other characters, including Lady Pratt’s grief over her lost son and what to do with the Fire Eyes for good.

I enjoyed this novel and this trilogy very much and would recommend it to those who like sweet historical romances.
