Review
Moorigad: a half-breed of two dragon species,
containing a blending of both abilities. Kyra is a moorigad, the daughter of
the water dragon queen and the fire dragon king. As such she faces a decision –
choose one of the species to live with for the rest of her life. But Kyra loves
both sides of her abilities and, instead of choosing, flees to the human realm
and finds refuge in a magical carnival. There, she becomes best friends of a
similar half-breed of two demonic species. However, their safety and indecision
can only last for so long.
Moorigad,
by Debra Kristi, contains all three books in the trilogy. It is a tale of
half-breeds in a world full of magic, for those who know where to look for it.
The world-building was fascinating, the characters were insightful, and the plot
was riveting. It was a truly complicated story filled with unexpected plot
twists.
The plot twists got me nearly every time. There
was no way I could have guessed what would happen in some of them. Others could
have used a little more foreshadowing, not to give it away but to make it flow
into the story better and not seem like a random addition out of nowhere. But I
think this book contained some of the most unexpected plot twists I have ever
seen. I am usually able to guess, but these completely surprised me.
The characters and their romance was certainly
interesting. Just when they were finally able to work out their problems
something came up to cause more. It was frustrating at times. Although, some of
the problems occurred because their love for one another overrode their desire
to be together – it would be better for the other to live than die, even if
living means living without the other person. That part was commendable and
spoke to the quality of their love.
There were a few things I did not like about this
book. One had to do with the amount of dark magic. I am not a fan of dark
magic, the kind using blood, death, sacrifices, and calling on demonic
creatures. It has its place, which for me is in the hands of the enemies rather
than the main characters, but I do not like it in general. This book was full
of it. The second thing was the sensual/sexual scenes. The characters never
described sex in gritty detail, but it was still more than I was comfortable
with, especially since most of the scenes involved the antagonist raping or
taking advantage of anther character. It was unnecessary to include that much
detail.
Moorigad
was a fascinating tale and I would recommend it fans of dark fantasy.
