About the Author

Author Picture 2015-2016 b
Faith Blum started writing at an early age. She started even before she could read! She even thought she could write better than Dr. Seuss. (The picture doesn't show it well, but there are scribblings on the page of Green Eggs and Ham). Now that she's grown up a little more, she knows she will probably never reach the success of Dr. Seuss, but that doesn't stop her from trying. When she isn't writing, Faith enjoys doing many right-brained activities such as reading, crafting, writing, playing piano, and playing games with her family. One of her dreams is to visit Castle City, Montana someday to see the ghost town she chose for her characters to live in. She currently lives on a hobby farm with her family in Wisconsin.

Review

Lily of the Valley, by Faith Blum, was a lovely historical romance.  The fifth book in the Hymns of the West Series, this book is set in the same western town as the previous novels and tells the story of several other young couples, friends or family members of those in the previous novels.  I enjoyed the adventures of Ruth, Micah, Annabel, and William as they sought to know God and each other better.  The danger created by the antagonist added to my interest in the story as I wondered what would happen to the main characters and the children.

It was easy to see some of the growth that took place in the characters' lives.  Each one of them had struggles to overcome.  Although they did not always succeed on the first try, their ultimate successes were an encouragement.

I could hardly believe the extent the town leaders went to on account of an unverifiable rumor.  I cannot say any more on the matter without revealing something, however.

The restrictions that Ruth and her parents made for her courtship were interesting to say the least.  She was asked not to form an emotional attachment to her beau until they were engaged, among other things.  She struggled, of course, but I could not help thinking that it might be a smart way to date someone in the present, because it would allow a dating couple to see each other a little more objectively at first and to make marriage or break-up decisions without so much heartache.  But without real-life testimonies, it is hard to know if it is even possible in the non-fictional world, besides the fact that dating/courting relationships have changed dramatically since the nineteenth century.  All that to say, I admired their way of courting somewhat.

Lily of the Valley was interesting on a number of levels and I enjoyed it because of that.  I would recommend it to anyone who enjoys clean historical romance or inspirational fiction.

Review Tour: The Last of the Firedrakes

Description

The Last of the Firedrakes
Farah Oomerbhoy

Synopsis from Goodreads:

16-year-old Aurora Darlington is an orphan. Mistreated by her adopted family and bullied at school, she dreams of running away and being free. But when she is kidnapped and dragged through a portal into a magical world, suddenly her old life doesn’t seem so bad.

Avalonia is a dangerous land ruled by powerful mages and a cruel, selfish queen who will do anything to control all seven kingdoms—including killing anyone who stands in her way. Thrust headlong into this new, magical world, Aurora’s arrival sets plans in motion that threaten to destroy all she holds dear.

With the help of a young fae, a magical pegasus, and a handsome mage, Aurora journeys across Avalonia to learn the truth about her past and unleash the power within herself. Kingdoms collide as a complicated web of political intrigue and ancient magic lead Aurora to unravel a shocking secret that will change her life forever.

Review

The Last of the Firedrakes, by Farah Oomerbhoy, was not quite what I expected.  At first, it seemed somewhat cliche.  The princess, thought dead, was found and has to fight to reclaim the throne, or the masked hero rescuing maidens and helping the poor.  As I continued to read, however, I found the book to be quite interesting.  The characters and the story pulled me in, making me long for the next book's publication.  There is a reason, after all, that some themes are overused.

The world the book is set in was fascinating.  There were fantastic creatures and several different kinds of people, many of whom inherit one kind of magical power or another.  I enjoyed the diversity of the settings within the world, too: from quaint fairy village to a magical university, from a medieval castles to eighteenth century-styled palaces.  I can hardly imagine the beauty.

I also enjoyed the characters.  Aurora struggled to find her place and accept her identity in the new world just as much as she struggled to control her substantial powers.  The bit of forbidden love involved only helped so much, since she could never have the man she grew to love.  Which brings me to another of the main characters.  This particular young man heroically clung to a deathbed promise spoken out of love, something that I think all readers will still wish he would break, no matter how upright it seems.

The plot, as I have mentioned, could have been done a little better, in my opinion.  But I still think the book is well worth the time spent on it.  I look forward to the sequels and conclusion of this series, after all, the end left much to be discovered and resolved.

I received a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

Black Friday Book Sale

Smiley

Like most other bookworms, great books make their way onto my "things I'm thankful for" list every year. It's hard to choose favorites, but I went ahead and picked five books I read in 2015 and am thankful for.
  1. A Time to Die by Nadine Brandes: I could go on and on about the things I love about this book. I am thankful for the things it taught me.
  2. Mark of Athena by Rick Riordan: This book (and series) helped me relate better with my young cousin, since this is her favorite book. I coincidentally found myself reading it when she came to visit and was able to "fangirl" about it with her.
  3. Draven's Light by Anne Elisabeth Stengl: I am grateful for the depth that Anne Elisabeth puts into all her books, including this, her newest novella. It made me think and grow as a person and a Christian.
  4. The Resistance by Jaye L. Knight: I can't write everything I loved about this book in such a short space. One thing I am grateful for, though, was that it helped me empathize with others a little bit more.
  5. The Royal Spy by Cassie Shiels: This is the funniest book I have read all year. I am grateful for the way it made me laugh.
I don't know about you, but I'm looking forward to another great year of reading! Speaking of more reading, here's one more thing to be grateful for. Books on sale! TODAY'S FREE SHORT STORY:

Wedding of His Dreams by Cari Lynn Webb

Some things don’t mix: champagne and pizza. Major holidays and once in a life-time, dream weddings. An uptight PhD Maid of Honor and a world weary, laid-back Best Man. But Ruthie Cain’s twin sister never received that memo. Rebecca (Becca) Cain has joined her bachelor and bachelorette parties with an afternoon at the dog park in San Francisco. The rehearsal dinner and Cain family reunion are scheduled for Thanksgiving Day in Lake Tahoe. And the guest list for the Saturday sunset wedding in the mountains overlooking the lake includes pets.

If only Ruthie was simply on the guest list. But her maid of honor duties have expanded to include more than holding the bouquet during the vows. Thanks to her psychology background, she's been elected to rein in Becca's bridezilla tendencies. Her fear of flying has made her chauffeur to not one, but two Great Danes. And she needs to find someone who can cook enough turkeys to feed a wedding party that keeps expanding by the hour.

Now if only she can persuade the best man, Matthew Wright, that his responsibilities include more than looking good in a tux, she might discover that sometimes the wrong things should mix.

Guest Post

I’m a new author to the Heartwarming line. My debut, The Matchmaker Wore Skates, will release in February 2016 as the second story in the anthology, Make Me A Match.

I’ve been reading romance since I picked up my first contemporary romance in an airport bookstore when I was in high school. I love strong emotional stories with characters defining what it means to be a part of a community, learning the value of family and discovering the power of their own happily-ever-afters. These are the types of stories I like to read and write. The fabulous group of Heartwarming authors deliver complex plots and compelling love stories with every book and keep me reaching for the latest Heartwarming release. I'm so proud to have been given the opportunity to write for Harlequin Heartwarming.

I’m very excited for the release of Make Me A Match on February 1, 2016. Here’s a quick overview:
Three bachelors turned…matchmakers?

One special night with Cooper Hamilton gave Nora Perry a precious gift. But no way is the sweet-talking salesman the right guy for her…or is he?

Former pro athlete Ty Porter could get burned when he falls for the beautiful reporter who ruined his career—and could now expose his most zealously guarded secret!

Gideon Walker has a long history with free-spirited flower shop owner Sophie Jennings. But when the banker-matchmaker fixes her up with potential candidates, he realizes he's made a terrible mistake…

Happy reading!

What I Learned From Craving Beauty

I started writing “Craving Beauty, Vol. 1” sometime back in 2009. About this time I was still writing some intense Lord of the Rings fanfiction with my twin best friends. We had many serious nerdette sessions where we plotted out future events for our “characters”. One of those sessions I broke out my brand-spanking-new manuscript for a darker Beauty & the Beast retelling. The twins listened to me read the first chapter aloud and were gracious and enthusiastic as ever, bless them. The first draft was horrible, but I kept tinkering away at it in the hopes it might become something great. In fact, it was my NaNoWriMo entry for 2014 because, yes, I was still writing it at that time.

Of all the projects I’ve worked on since I started writing professionally, Vynasha’s story has stuck with me the longest. It has been drafted and re-drafted, revised and edited and revised again. At times I wanted to throw in the towel and give up because I thought I would never see the day it would publish. Some authors in that position might have set it aside for a later date, or put it away for good to collect dust. And I might have done exactly that except for one thing, I love the story. I love gothic romances and fairy tale retellings, and “Craving Beauty” is somewhat of a conglomerate of the two. It has elements of horror and high fantasy with the necessary Byronic hero and a heroine who isn’t your average “Beauty.”

My beta and friend, Allison and I worked on new revisions this last year. I finally sat down to finish what I started six years ago. Part of my incentive came from real life. I had gone through several major life changes, from moving, getting married to getting pregnant for the first time. I lost that pregnancy, as well as the second one a couple of months later. About this time last year, I lost my day job. To say this last year was hard is an understatement. But rather than wallow in self-pity like I wanted to do, I tried to stay busy, to keep writing. Craving Beauty as you know it was born from those tough months. Much of Vynasha’s journey is shaped by the loss she suffers before we meet her. After everything that happened this last year, I feel like I know her a lot better.

I learned a lot about myself as a writer and about writing while working on Craving Beauty. From my first editor, Sara O’Connor, I learned that while prose is a very lovely thing, you can’t substitute it for dialogue. People will get bored if you insist on describing the silver trees for the fifth time in a chapter. Sara not only helped me retool and reshape the rough draft, but how to believe in the story. My beta, Allison taught me perseverance. Long after I wanted to give up on the story and writing in general, Allison was there helping me pick up the pieces. From famed thriller author, Stephen King’s “Memoir On Writing”, I learned that real authors actually pen multiple drafts of their works. Not all of them, but many do three to four drafts and its okay if you don’t publish your first. Good chance is your first draft sucks as bad as mine did.

It’s amazing how writing a book can become a reflection of your life and how you’ve changed over time. Since I started working on Vynasha’s story, a lot has changed I’m happy to say. And I’m glad I didn’t give up when I had the chance. My biggest encouragement to you fellow readers and writers is to never give up on your passion in life, no matter what life decides to throw at you. I believe everything happens for a reason, good and the bad. It’s up to you to decide how you are going to take what comes your way, whether you turn it into something ugly or beautiful. I’m happy to tell you that I am not only pregnant again, but expecting a healthy boy this next month around Christmas. I might be praying I don’t go into labor at an awkward time, you know, like while we’re carving the Christmas ham. I’m also happy to share the release of Craving Beauty with y’all. Vynasha’s journey is centered on her faith in a better life for her and Wyll, and the hope for a brighter future. It’s been a long journey, but one I wouldn’t trade for a peanut butter cup.
