About the Author
Review of Maia and the Xifarian Conspiracy
After learning that her dream of attending the university would finally come true, thirteen year old Maia went on a trip to the market. However, the events at the market's city completely disrupt her plans as her talents are discovered and she is taken to the planet Xif as a part of a special training opportunity. Will Maia's plans to get herself expelled occur? Or will she set aside her irritation to become the leader her team needs?
Maia and the Xifarian Conspiracy was the first real science fiction story I have ever read. Upon reading this book, I have to say I was not disappointed in the least. It's entertaining story and unique setting was both fascinating and completely appropriate for its age group.
One of the first things I noticed in this book was its imagery. S. G. Basu vividly described each setting Maia entered, portraying the beauty of the landscape and effectively setting the stage for the events that subsequently took place. The descriptions were easy to understand and image even though they were set in a completely different universe.
The different characters in Maia and the Xifarian Conspiracy were entertaining to watch. Each of them added something irreplaceable to the five person team Maia led. The characters either clashed or clicked realistically according to their personalities, talents, and even age. Sometimes it was difficult to differentiate each of their personalities, but overall, there were few problems.
Since Maia and the Xifarian Conspiracy is science fiction, I was curious to see what new technology would be created for the story. Some of the technology is familiar, such as tablets, making it easier to keep track of instead of being bombarded with new names. However, some of the different types of space ships and the main energy source were unique. The special powers of some of the characters and their use in the technological world also added to the originality of the book.
This Young Adult book was interesting and entertaining. I would definitely recommend it to others. Also, I found that this genre is something I will definitely read more of in the future.
